Launch of the Digital Good Platform

“Digital Good” – Helping to achieve the SDGs

RIYADH/21/November/2015 – Under the auspices of His Excellency Dr. Nizar O. Madani, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program, the national launch of the “Digital Good” platform took place in Riyadh on Saturday the 21st of November, 2015.

The idea for the development of the “Digital Good” platform came from the Saudi youth who participated in the Saudi International Youth Dialogue Forums organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNDP.  Under this initiative, a digital platform has been developed by UNDP through which people around the world can contribute to the implementation of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals globally. The Saudi Government supported this youth initiative through a contribution to US $ 2 million to UNDP for the development of the platform in January of this year.

The Digital Good has the potential to be a major tool for advancing human development by mobilizing funds from ordinary people around the world to support the implementation of SDG projects through UNDP for poverty reduction and social inclusion, food-energy-water security, health, education and environmental sustainability. This platform allows individuals, companies and philanthropists to give online contributions to specific areas of assistance and projects, and to UNDP’s work and mission as a whole.

The Digital Good platform will include cutting edge engagement tools, technology and strategies to build a global community of SDG advocates and supporters. More than a simple fundraising tool, the platform will stand as a key resource allowing people around the world to learn about the SDGs, monitor progress, and take direct action to boost progress towards the goals at global and local levels. UNDP’s Digital Good’s innovative approach hopes to form a strong and lasting relationship with ordinary people around the world on the SDGs.

His Excellency, Dr. Madani, delivered a statement in which he welcomed the Saudi launch of the Digital Good Platform following the New York inauguration on the sidelines of the General Assembly last September. In his statement, His Excellency announced that he has received orders from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin AbdulAziz, to donate the amount of USD $500,000 in support of the varied range of development projects to be targeted with funds raised through the Digital Good platform. He expressed his pride in the Saudi youth who conceived and developed the idea of the platform from the very outset, and participated in organizing its framework, adding that they represent the true segments of Saudi society and the noble values of Islam.

This was followed by the statement of the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Dr. Ashok Nigam in which he expressed UNDP's appreciation for the initiative of the Saudi youth, the support of the Kingdom for the development of the platform and for the announcement made today of the generous donation to the Digital Good platform to fund projects under the SDGs.  He noted that the Saudi youth’s idea of fostering assistance from ‘people-to-people’ is consistent with the Islamic principles of helping people.  The Digital Good platform provides the opportunity to extend the culture of ‘giving’ around the world for achieving the SDGs.

The launch was attended by high-ranking officials, businessmen, media figures, ambassadors of Gulf Cooperation Council states, as well as states in which youth forums have been held,: Brazil, China, Germany, Republic of Korea, India,  Spain and Tanzania. Also in attendance were the youth that initiated the project. Individuals all around the world can now contribute to the implementation of the SDGs through UNDP by donating through the following website: www.digitalgood.info

The rollout of Digital Good is UNDP’s response to a surge in demand among people worldwide to achieve results for sustainable human development at the global and local levels. Fundraising directly from individuals is an important way to mobilize resources to support development efforts and create worldwide ownership in the successful implementation of the SDGs. The most direct and fastest growing way to raise funds from individuals, especially youth, is to engage with them where they spend most time communicating in the digital world.

This initiative recognizes the important role that Saudi Arabia is playing in development and humanitarian assistance and expands its role in leading global development efforts. As the world moves to meet the challenge of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals leadership of Saudi Arabia in their achievement in the Kingdom and with other strategic partners to achieve the global vision will be critically important.
