The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) organized a workshop for journalists titled “Capacity building workshop for local media on the Sustainable Development Goals” to better understand the SDGs for future professional reporting in any news related to UNDP and the UN. In addition, the workshop was aiming to strengthen media relations with UNDP.
Noeman Al-Sayyad, UNDP regional communication advisor, started with a brief introduction of the attendees, which included a range of journalists from local news and international news in Saudi Arabia, and their interest/concern/expectations of the SDGs.
The first session of the workshop by Noeman Al-Sayyad focused on explaining the transition from the MDGs to SDGs, the results and the way forward. Also, the facilitator explained what are the SDGs and how will they transform the globe?
Talking about UNDP & Saudi Arabia’s partnership, Senior Programme Associate Yassin Yassin explained the commitment towards achieving the SDGs and what is the role of the media in achieving and reporting about the SDGs and how can we work with the media for a better understanding of sustainable development.
The third session was given by UNDP assistant resident representative Mayssam Tamim, who provided an outline and description of the United Nations Development Programme, 2017-2021 KSA CDP and UNDP priorities and partnerships in Saudi Arabia.
The fourth session, also by Noeman AlSayyad, concluded with the role of UNDP in supporting the 2030 SDG followed by a Q&A by the journalists.
Saudi Arabia has expressed its commitment to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the core of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. It recognizes that both the SDGs and the Saudi Vision 2030 call for inclusive processes of development whereby all stakeholders get involved, not only in realization of an achievement but in sharing its benefits as well.
