The International Volunteer Day was set by United Nations on the 5th of December to celebrate volunteers and volunteer organizations’ efforts in raising awareness and the contribution they make to their communities. In 1985 the International Volunteer Day was designed to be an observance day by way of celebrating volunteerism. It is also a great opportunity for volunteers and volunteer organizations to promote their work for all the concern parties in their country.

The International Volunteer Day enables grassroot voluntary movements to connect with local communities, United Nations (UN) efforts and government authorities. It is a chance to raise awareness of the contribution volunteers give to the well-being of their community.

This year, the United Nations Development Programme and Princess Al Anood Center for Youth Development (Warif), established under Princess Al Anood Foundation celebrated the International Volunteer Day on the 11th of December 2014 at UN-House in Riyadh.

Warif provides a platform for volunteers all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to come together to help others and the IVD is an opportunity to shed light on their work and share success stories. The event highlighted the significant impact that volunteerism makes nationally and internationally with a number of youth presenting their experiences in volunteerism and how they helped their communities. Warif also announced winners of “Volunteer for Good” competition, which they launched a month ago.

UNDP and Warif recognize the important role volunteerism play in harnessing the potential of young people. For young people, engaging in voluntary work can be an opportunity to change the world for the better while learning new skills, gaining knowledge and learning about new cultures.

"On this International Volunteer Day, let us be inspired by the many individuals who selflessly serve others, and let us resolve to do our part to contribute, freely and proactively, to change conditions now towards a better future for all,” The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon statement for the International Volunteer Day.

The ceremony was two hours long with fourteen speakers who addressed various issues related to youth and volunteerism. The fourteen speakers are;
